Medusa Collective NYC is proud to present a reading of Side by Side, written by Basil Parnell and directed by Han Bumanlag.

Francis and Mom are in a car. It’s moving. How was school today? Side by Side drives and shifts through time, life, school, queerness, the relationship between mother and child, and how far apart the passenger and driver's seats can be from one another.

Meet the Playwright

Basil Parnell (They/He) is a playwright, dramaturg, and theatre artist from Northwest Arkansas. Their work has been developed as a part of the Arkansas New Play Festival at TheatreSquared (2023 Apprentice Playwright), the Arktype New Works Festival, and the Inverse Performance Art Festival. They often write about the Ozarks, the southern queer and trans experience, seismic life changes, and the things that make us human. They are a recent graduate of Marymount Manhattan College with a BA in Writing for the Stage, and a member of the Dramatists Guild. Basil is currently a MFA Playwriting student at the University of Arkansas.

MOM

Yeshi Berry

Yeshi Berry is a performer based in New York City. Originally from Washington State, Yeshi started as a dancer training in a wide variety of styles. Her acting training began at her arts magnet school where they were trained in heightened language as well as physical theatre techniques such as Commedia dell’arte and clown work.

Yeshi will soon be entering her senior year at Marymount Manhattan College where they are pursing a BFA in Acting. She is a member of the improv comedy team as well as the sketch comedy team at the college. Some recent credits include Come As You Are by Chloe Selavka at the Rough Draft Festival, excerpts of 53% Of directed by Han Bumanlag, Peonies (Don’t Leave) at The Tank, and Lysistrata at Theatre 555.

FRANCES / FRANCIS

Nick Stapp

Nick Stapp is a creative who loves anything out of this world, weird, and genuine. He won the Evvy award for outstanding short film at his alma mater Emerson College, where he graduated with a degree in Media Arts Production and a minor in fiction. Born in Austin, Texas, Nick now lives in New York City where he works as a production designer, prop maker, and sound recordist. In his free time, he loves reading and drawing comics.

Spencer Senzon

Spencer Senzon (They/Them) is a theatre artist hailing from Long Island, New York. Their work is inspired by beauty, angst, and what happens behind closed doors. Spencer works in Front of House for the Public Theater and is currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Writing for the stage at Marymount Manhattan College. You can find them stomping around in their doc Martens with a Slushy in one hand and a dream in the other.

Recent Credits: Horatio (MMC's Hamletmachene at New York Live Arts), Playwright (2015 Fantasy, MMC's Bordeaux Box Theatre)

Han Bumanlag

Han is a theatre director, writer, and poet based in Brooklyn, NY. They are Filipinx-American femme from the San Francisco Bay Area and this past December, received their BA in Theatre Arts with a Concentration in Directing. In their work, Han seeks to protect and uplift of artists of color while leading and creating from a place of joy, tenderness, and vulnerability.

Producer

Isabella Fatigati

Isabella Fatigati is the Artistic Director of the Medusa Collective and an interdisciplinary artist. They are a playwright, photographer, producer, sales coordinator and more. Isabella is the current Studio Rentals Assistant at New York City Center.

Isabella believes that media should serve its audiences and should always aim to help audiences consider things from kinder perspectives. Common themes in their work are healing from abuse, self discovery, and digital experimentation.

Stage Manager

Logan Malcynski

Logan Malczynski (He/Him) is a NJ and NYC-based stage manager, producer, and production assistant. He is currently a senior at Marymount Manhattan College where he is studying Theatre Arts with a concentration in Producing and Management, with a minor in Communications and Media Arts. His previous credits include "HAMLETMACHINE" and "The Spongebob Musical" at Marymount Manhattan College. In addition to this, he has also worked on a few short films as a production assistant and gaffer.

Assistant Producer

Kat Sloan Garcia

Kat Sloan Garcia (she/her) is a playwright and stage manager based in New York City. Originally from California, her work focuses on culture identity and intersectional femininity experiences. Her thesis project “Thus Play is Not Yet Titled” (dir. Tammie Swoopes) was presented at Marymount Manhattan College where she graduated with a dual degree in Spring 2023.

As a stage manager, Kat has worked with Theatre Masters on the Take Ten Festival for three consecutive years (2022,2023, 2024). She's also stage managed for the Broadway Green Alliance's Broadway Celebrates Earth Day Concert in Time Square and the Working Theatre's “The Scream Inside”. Additional projects include: “Clowntown” by Isabella Fatigati and “Small Parties” by Alexandra Rogers.

She also spend 2023-24 working as the Museum of Arts and Design's Resident Swiftie at their exhibit “Taylor Swift: Storyteller”. @katsloangarcia

Assistant Producer

Nick MacNeil

Nick MacNeil (He/They) is an actor, photographer, filmmaker, dancer, sound designer, New Media artist,and theater artist located in Manhattan. Nick Recently received his BA in Theatre and New Media and minors in communications, dance, and interactive media at Marymount Manhattan College. Throughout Nick’s work Nick focuses on areas such as neurodivergence, queerness, and mental health.

Previous credits include: “Dance of the Lavender” featured in Immersive sensations exhibit at the Judith Mara Carson Center for Visual Arts, Nick’s short film “Bethany” debuting at 2023’s Stand Up Speak Out festival, “FOOLPROOF!: a film by emi verhar” (2024), “Screaming in New York” (2024), “Searching for a Signal” (2023), The Rocky Horror Picture Show at Double Feature Productions (2024).
